Easter is coming and with that we'll start to see traditional Ukrainian pysanky.

What is a pysanka?

It is an Easter egg decorated using a wax resist (batik) method. This method involves repeatedly coating beeswax (applied via heat and a special wax dotting tool) and dipping in coloured dyes to produce beautiful symbolic and geometric designs.

The name derives from the Ukrainian verb "pysaty" meaning "to write". ("Pysanka is the singular form; "pysanky" is plural.)

Ukraine has a deep history and Ukrainians have been decorating eggs for many, many generations. It is a ritualistic element in the design and colour coating process. Many of the design motifs on pysanky date back to pre-Christian times, early Slavic cultures, while some date back to neolithic ancestors of Ukraine from the days of the Trypillians and other palaeolithic times.

To help celebrate and learn about this unique Ukrainian Easter tradition, we invite you to produce your own pysanka on site at Rosewood this April.

We will be hosting two events with all tickets sales (every dollar of the ticket) being donated to registered Canadian-Ukrainian charities- Help Us Help and Canada-Ukraine Foundation. Each ticket is $100. For anyone who cannot attend and still wants to purchase a ticket please contact William directly at
